The UK’s proximity to mainland Europe means we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to holiday spots. Sofia, capital of Bulgaria is no exception, and being only three hours away it’s well worth the £27 flight this January.
On Monday, January 15, there’s an 8.50pm flight from Luton Airport which gets in at 1.55am Bulgarian time. The return is at 6.30am from Sofia Airport on Monday, January 22, which lands at 7.30am GMT due to time zone differences. You can check out more flights on Skyscanner.
Sofia - and Bulgaria in general - is popular with British holidaymakers, in particular for how cheap it is. But not just for the cost-effectiveness of the trip, there’s a lot to do there too.

What To Do
Visiting St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral is an absolute must. It was completed fairly recently - in 1912 - but has a very interesting history to it. The cathedral wasn’t actually built in the name of Bulgaria, it was built to celebrate the lives of the 200,000 dead Russian soldiers from the Russo-Turkish Liberation War which began in 1877 and ended in 1878.
Better yet, it’s free to enter and is open seven days a week from 7am until 7pm. A Communist walking tour around the city as there are still many sites around Sofia which date back to the days of the USSR.
It costs around £13 per adult and gives you an insight into life under Bulgaria’s Communist regime which was in place from 1946 until 1989. And of course, while you’re there you’ll work up an appetite.
