The Body Shop's £12 cleansing balm shoppers say is 'magical' and melts makeup 'in seconds'

Cleansing balms are one of the best ways to remove make-up thoroughly while cleansing the skin. Although products from brands such as Clinique and Elemis are very popular, there are cheaper alternatives that work just as well.

The Camomile Sumptuous Makeup Cleansing Butter is one of The Body Shop's bestsellers and is priced at just £12 for 90ml (£6 for 20ml). Tough on makeup - even waterproof -, but gentle on skin, the balm is said to remove makeup in under 30 seconds.

With a rich but lightweight buttery texture, it helps to remove impurities, SPF and pollutants while leaving skin feeling nourished with moisture. Dermatologically tested, it's suitable for sensitive skin and eyes, including contact lens wearers.

"I adore this product, it's easy to use, smells beautiful and melts away"

And to easily remove any residue, you can use the £12 The Body Shop Reusable Makeup Remover Pads, which are machine washable and made from organic cotton and bamboo. The balm has a 4.8 rating from over 2860 reviews.

A shopper wrote: "This cleansing butter is absolutely magical, you only need a small amount and it melts into the skin removing even waterproof makeup. The scent is lovely, this cleansing butter left my skin feeling clean and super soft so highly recommend."

"One of the best oil based cleansers that I've used and the best value for money," another added, while a third commented: "This is perfection, I break out easily with oils/cremes, but this does the trick - even removes waterproof mascara. Usually dread having to go wash off my makeup, but this makes it so easy and a nice experience."

There has been little criticism of the product but some customers complained about the packaging: "I’m an avid buyer of this product, I have eczema and it is lush on my skin, it gets rid of my makeup so quickly! However, I always seem to have issues with the tin, it’s either too slippery, on too tight or I need to push it on to twist it off again - I recently came into an issue where the tin literally sealed itself shut."

Alternatively, there's the No7 Cleansing Balm, available from Boots at £11.95. Enriched with nourishing oils to help smooth away dryness, it works to dissolve away make-up, impurities, and pollutants.

The balm has a 4.5 rating based on 248 reviews. "I have now repurchased this 3 times, it is so much better than the Clinique one in terms of price, making a difference to my skin and the lovely but light smell. Takes off all my waterproof brow pomade, mascara and heavy foundation and works a dream," said a buyer.
