A 19-year-old man has died after being stabbed in south London.

The fatal stabbing happened after 19:00 GMT on Saturday in Rye Lane in Peckham, Met Police said.

The teenager was transferred to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The victim's next of kin has been informed and the road remains closed as a murder investigation is launched.

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course, police said.

Supt Gabriel Cameron, from the Met Police, said: "No one should lose their life because of knife crime.

"This morning, family and friends are waking up without their loved one. Our thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time."

A number of buses have been diverted and travellers are advised to plan their journeys using the Transport for London website.

The force said there would be an increased police presence in the area, and officers have asked anyone who was near the incident, near the junction of Heaton Road, between 18:30 and 19:30 on Saturday to contact them.
